Winners of ABN AMRO Sustainable 50 2024 announced

The ABN AMRO Sustainable 50 serves as a barometer of sustainability in the sector and identifies leaders who contribute to a more sustainable built environment with vision, action and innovation. This year the categories were expanded to emphasise the variety of contributions, with the ‘Designer, ‘Maker' and ‘Doer' joining the familiar ‘Young Professional’ category. Another new category was the public award. Thousands of people were able to cast their votes for this prize following the jury’s announcement of the 50 nominees on 17 October.

2024 winners

• Overall Winner and Winner in the ‘Designer’ category: Andy van den Dobbelsteen, Professor of Climate Design & Sustainability at Delft University of Technology, for his innovative approach to policy-making and design that paves the way for a sustainable future.

• Winner in the ‘Doer’ category: Dick van Ginkel of TBI WOONlab, for his practical implementation of sustainable solutions that make immediate impact.

• Winnner in the 'Maker' category: Lars Hulsbeek of Dusseldorp Infra, Sloop en Milieutechniek, for developing groundbreaking products and concepts that put sustainability into practice.

• Winner of the 'Young Professional Award': Sacha Brons of Climate Cleanup, acknowledged for his outstanding contributions and fresh perspectives within the sector in the field of carbon storage and disposal.

• Winner of the ‘Public award’: Harwil de Jonge of Heijmans.

Driving the transition

The jury, a panel of experts with extensive knowledge about sustainability in the construction and real estate sector, assessed the nominees on their impact, knowledge sharing, ability to deliver, and contribution to systemic change. "This years’ winners not only demonstrate leadership, but also an inspiring willingness to collaborate and push boundaries in the sustainability challenge," says Leontien de Waal, Construction Sector Banker at ABN AMRO, and also a member of the jury.

ABN AMRO organises the Sustainable 50 to recognise and motivate system thinkers and advocates of sustainability. "The ultimate sustainability lies in making better use of what we already have," explains Bas Rutten, ABN AMRO’s Head of Sector Cluster Commercial Real Estate, Hotels and Leisure. "We present this award to celebrate the drivers of the sustainability transition and encourage them to continue on their path to a sustainable future."

The Sustainable 50 is one of the ways ABN AMRO contributes to the sustainability transition in the construction sector. Additionally, the bank offers its clients various products and services to support them in their transition, such as expertise in subsidies for sustainable new builds or sustainably renovating existing properties.

A platform for urgent sustainability themes

The award ceremony took place during Klimaattop GO, where public and private partners gather to make agreements on how to accelerate sustainability in the built environment. The summit not only offers a platform for presenting the awards, but also for sharing knowledge and driving progress on urgent sustainability themes.
