ABN AMRO Sustainable Impact Fund invests in Urban Mine
ABN AMRO’s Sustainable Impact Fund (SIF) has acquired a stake in Urban Mine, a leader in sustainable construction and concrete recycling. This strategic investment supports Urban Mine in optimizing its existing plant in Zaandam and laying the groundwork for a second facility in the Netherlands, further advancing its mission to revolutionize the concrete industry with sustainable, circular solutions.
Urban Mine emerged as an independent entity in 2021, spun off from a Dutch construction leader with a legacy of reducing concrete waste dating back to the 1950s. The company was founded to leverage their groundbreaking concrete recycling technology, which efficiently extracts all core components of concrete rubble for re-use. This proprietary process enables the production of high-quality, low-carbon concrete as well as aggregates. “Partnering with ABN AMRO’s Sustainable Impact Fund allows us to scale our operations, optimize our existing production capabilities, and accelerate our domestic and international expansion while leveraging our first-mover advantage in the circular concrete market,” says Scief Houben, CEO of Urban Mine.
Urban Mine’s plant in Zaandam has demonstrated robust commercial performance and is on track to grow revenue over 60% year over year. SIF’s investment will lay the groundwork for expansion to a second facility and enhancing its capacity to meet the growing demand for low-carbon ‘concrete solutions.
“We are thrilled to support this innovative company at the forefront of sustainable construction”, says Maarten Blomme, Managing Director of the ABN AMRO Sustainable Impact Fund. “Urban Mine’s pioneering approach to recycling concrete and producing low-carbon concrete using recycled aggregates is a game-changer for the industry. By reducing the carbon footprint of concrete production, Urban Mine is helping the decarbonization of a sector that has long been a significant contributor to global emissions. Our investment underscores ABN AMRO’s commitment to backing sustainable technologies that drive a more resilient, low-carbon future”.
